By Justin Felgar Of The Spirit

BROOKVILLE — The Brookville Area School Board held its reorganization meeting on Monday, welcoming new members Matthew Park, Christopher Rhodes, Erin Schiafone and Jacob Shields.

Don Gill kicked off the meeting by presiding over the appointment of the temporary board president. Kerith Strano Taylor was appointed as temporary board president. Strano Taylor presided over the appointment of the board president and vice president, with Don Gill being nominated by Dr. Fred Park for board president and Fred Park being nominated by Gill for vice president. They were both reappointed to their respective positions.

The regular schedule of board meetings will continue through 2022, with the regular board meetings being held on the third Monday of each month (adjusted for holidays) at 7 p.m. at Hickory Grove Elementary, with the exception of the reorganization meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 5, 2022, with the regular board meeting immediately following.

The work sessions will be held the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at Hickory Grove, with the exception of February, July, August and December.

Herb McConnell was reappointed as the PSBA Liaison. Fred Park was reappointed as the Jeff Tech representative. Matthew Park was appointed as the RIU No. 6 representative. Strano Taylor was reappointed as the Raider Scholastic Foundation Board representative. The buildings and grounds, athletics and activities, transportation, and negotiations committees were reestablished.

Park welcomed the new members and said he is looking forward to what they will accomplish together.

“I would just like to welcome Jacob, Erin, Christopher and Matthew to the board. I look forward to working with you. These are interesting times to be in education. I believe you will find it exciting and challenging, and I believe that as long as we keep focused on what is best for our students, we will do well. I look forward to the next year to see how we forge forward. I think there is always room for a fresh look, and that is what elections do, bring those opportunities. Thank you for running and accepting,” Park said.

Gill agreed with Park and encouraged the new members to enjoy the challenge.

“It will be challenging. Being on the board is one of the best educations I have ever received. Enjoy it, and most of all, don’t be afraid to speak your peace. We don’t have to agree on everything, but that is how we get things done. Again, congratulations to all of you,” Gill said.

In other business, superintendent Dr. Erich May updated the board on the latest state masking order, noting that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has extended the stay on the lower court’s ruling to eliminate the masking order to Dec. 8, when it will hear oral arguments.

“We will keep you and the public informed. I would expect a robocall on the night of the 8th to address the current status of the mandate,” May said.

He gave an update to the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the student, with the number being at five positive cases. He said the district had one positive case last year at this time.

“Our numbers continue to be up from last year, but they are down from the beginning of the year,” May said.
